Sanket Sargar became the first Indian to claim a medal at the (2022) Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as he grabbed silver in weightlifting on the second day of the quadrennial event.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Sanket Sargar was born on the 16th of October 2000 in Sangli, Maharashtra. His father’s name is Mahadev who has a ‘Paan shop’ and food stall.

EDUCATION

Sanket Sargar completed his higher education at Shivaji University.

ABOUT

Sanket Sargar began weightlifting at the age of 13. However, he first came into the limelight in 2020 when he won the gold medal at the Senior National Championship. In fact, he won another gold medal in the Khelo India Youth Games in the same year while studying at Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Later, Sargar won two more senior national championships in 2021 and 2022. Sanket Sargar first came into the limelight at the Singapore International Weightlifting Meet in 2022. There, he lifted a total of 256 kg (113 kg in snatch, 143 kg in clean and jerk) to win gold medals.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2022

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, the process, he broke both the Commonwealth and the national records for the 55-kg men’s category. As he clinched a silver in weightlifting on the second day of the quadrennial event.
Sargar finished second in the men’s 55kg weightlifting final behind Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia, who lifted a total of 249 kg in comparison to Sargar’s 248.
